Royal princes William and Harry will not have been unaware that their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, would have celebrated her 52nd birthday on Monday. However, even this year as the birth of William and Kate's baby looms ever closer, the event seems to pass virtually without a mention.
As we await news of the latest royal arrival I cannot but feel particularly sad that she will not be around for this important occasion for Diana was a very loving mother. We cannot fail to remember the pictures of her laughing during the happy times on visits to theme parks or when she threw her arms around her boys when reunited with them after a prolonged absence on a royal trip abroad. William and Harry are wonderful because she was their mother and she surely lives on in them. I am sure I am not alone in hoping that, should the baby be a girl, their grandmother might be remembered among the numerous names a royal baby is usually given.
I wish the new parents a straightforward birth and a happy start in their family life but I cannot but imagine how Diana would have adored being a grandma and I will spare more than one thought for her when I hear the announcement that the new baby has arrived.
